When we think of Valentines Day what normally comes
to mind is seduction, romance, and even sweethearts! This holiday is celebrated
around the world, but is greeting cards and a box of chocolates really what
this tradition is all about? Some critics have stated they feel Valentines Day,
a lot like Christmas has become very “commercialized.” You literally can’t go a
day without seeing a TV commercial depicting someone being purposed to or even
a romantic gesture. This holiday brings really large revenue to many business
that plaster there windows with red, purple, and pink clothing, accessories,
and even items to get for your man.
Besides wishing your significant other love
this holiday. Some people actually wish everyone Happy Valentines Day. The word
Valentine is so interesting enough to make us beg the question. What is the
origin of this special romantic holiday?
The day was first associated
with romantic love in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love
flourished. In 18th-century England, it evolved over time into an
occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting
flowers, offering confectionary, and sending greeting cards (known as
“valentines”).
In Europe, Saint Valentine’s
Keys are given to lovers “as a romantic symbol and an invitation to unlock the
giver’s heart”, as well as to children, in order to ward off epilepsy (called Saint
Valentine’s Malady). Since the 19th century, handwritten valentines
have given way to mass-production greeting cards.
